Rocking Bench

This project originated from a foundational bench assignment and evolved into an exploration of traditional form and relational function. Drawing inspiration from the Windsor chair, this two-person bench provided an opportunity to develop technical skills in wood turning and hand carving, while also examining the mechanics of seating and balance.

The piece references the idea of a courting bench—designed to bring people together—but introduces an element of play and interdependence. Built on rockers and deliberately unbalanced, the bench is only stable when occupied by two people. When a single user sits, the piece tips dramatically, making it unusable alone. When two users coordinate their movements, the bench becomes both functional and meditative—requiring physical cooperation to achieve balance and rhythm. The result is an object that not only supports, but also encourages communication, trust, and shared experience.
